EXERCISE 36(A)

She put a thirteen amp plug on the table lamp.

To romp means to play in a lively manner.

The hemp plant is used to make fibre and drugs.
This rope on the ship is made of hemp fibres.
We had to hump the heavy luggage all the way upstairs.
Humping all these heavy bags is very tiring.
A wimp is a person who is weak and timid.
A wimpy person is not going to do anything brave.

The campers chased the dog which was scampering about.
The cats began to scamper through the bushes.
A camber is the sloping sides of a road to allow drainage.

Once a tree is felled, the cut wood is called lumber.

Moving the lumber in his job gave him lumbar troubles.
I have packed the hamper with all the food and drink.

We have a romper room for the children at the back.
I made a pompon for the top of the ski hat.
All this rain is not going to dampen our desire to go out.

A hempen rope is one made of hemp fibres.
To impen means to close up in a pen or a narrow place.

A tampon is a plug of cotton fibres to stop a flow of blood.

Last Monday I bumped into an old school friend.
They tried to tempt us with delicious chocolates.
I have made an attempt at reading your writing.

I tramped up the hill and dumped my luggage at the hotel.
The bear jumped up and chomped through its food.
Last Sunday we camped out in a field all night.

If you make an assumption, you are taking a guess.

You make a presumption when your guess has some basis.

There was a great temptation to give up on the study.

A strumpet is a lady of ill repute or a harlot.
A crumpet is a bun or muffin made on a griddle.
A limpet is a sea animal that lives in limpid pools.

The implication is that we must find new premises.

It will be a simple thing to implement these changes.

She was very upset to find a pimple on her nose.

I am very impatient to start that new project at work.
He spoke in a very impassioned way about his hobby.
She is an impassionate person, filled with strong emotions.
The children have to be patient until the party date comes.
We are waiting patiently for them to come home.
She is passionate about her new hobby of tennis.

I have an important meeting at nine with some customers.
We are aware of the importance of keeping good records.
Your writing is going to improve if you practise every day.
His handwriting has indeed improved over the last month.
We have seen a great improvement in sales this month.
It is quite impossible for us to see any visitors today.

He is now home and more importantly his health is improving.
It is not a good thing to treat customers as unimportant.
They say she is impossibly bossy when in the office.
We are doing our best to be sympathetic in this case.
It is impossible to write as fast as that without much practice.
It seems that they can write faster than anyone we know.
