SHUN HOOKS 2 - LARGE & SMALL SHUN HOOKS

LARGE SHUN HOOK Continued

(A) Ing

Use stroke Ing where it is able to join, and Dot Ing otherwise:

(B) Halving

A stroke with Shun Hook can be halved. The halving is read last, the same as with N Hook:

stationed, cautioned cushioned fashioned envisioned motioned functioned

Stroke Ish is used where halving is not possible:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
mentioned pensioned tensioned intentioned sanctioned*

* Omits the lightly-sounded K; the presence of the Circle S would make halving unclear

(C) Shun Hook not used:

If the Shun Hook cannot be formed, full strokes are used:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
shun shunning shunned/shunt ocean Asian

If the "sh-n" sound has a different vowel, it does not use the Shun Hook.

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
harshen sunshine moonshine

These are "shent" and "shence" not "shun":

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
patient patience ancient sentient sentience

Compare: patient passionate

(D) SMALL SHUN HOOK

After Circle S, or Hook N + Circle S, continue the circle into a small curl. A third position dot vowel is written against the outside end of the curl, but other dot and dash vowel signs are not shown. This is the only instance of a plain vowel being written against an attachment:

possession position proposition opposition disposition decision

Pitman's New Era Shorthand
accusation succession taxation physician

A further small Circle S is written inside the curl:

Another stroke can be added if it joins well:

A stroke with the Small Shun Hook is not halved. Use joined stroke D for past tense:

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

Use Dot Ing, as stroke Ing cannot join:
